Materials for Parts of a Flower DIY Learning Toy
They are found in every home and mostly get thrown out every other day.

Let me to convince you to keep that next TP roll. They are one of my favorite materials to work with, they are free and you can make amazing learning toys with them!

Learning and Playing with this TP Roll Parts of a Flower Toy
First of all, find a good day and take a nature walk in the garden, nursery or flower shop with your child. Take your time to observe the beautiful flowers.
Nothing beats the actual experience of getting in touch with real flowers.
Here are some conversation starters:
- Which is your favorite flower?
- Which is the tallest flower with the longest stem?
- What do you notice about the leaves of different flowers? Do they look the same? Which has the biggest leaves/ most leaves?
- Notice how these flowers are all growing in soil. I wonder what’s under the soil?
The experience of this nature walk will help connect what they see in real life to the TP roll flower they build and strengthen the whole learning experience.
At home, invite your child to build a flower with this learning toy by inserting and stacking the TP rolls through a kitchen roll stand. Young children will love this hands-on way to learn about parts of a flower (roots, stem, leaf and flower).
Watch this DIY stacking toy in action!
TIP: No kitchen roll stand? Poke a stick or straw through a small box to make a stand.
As your child is building his/her flower, that’s the perfect time to emphasize the different parts of the flowers.

How to Extend the Learning Experience for Older Children
For older preschoolers or kindergarteners, take this chance to extend the learning experience and discuss the functions of each part of a flower. I like to use simple terms for young children.
- Leaves make food for the plant.
- Stem brings food and water to every part of the plant.
- Flowers make seeds which will grow into more flowers.
- Roots take in water.
